Abraham Lincoln: Lincoln never joined a church or professed a religion, he spoke out often against Christianity in particular. “The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession.” “My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation and the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them.”
Carl Sagan: Comfort quotes Sagan out of context (big surprise). The actual quote was: “My view is that if there is no evidence for it, then forget about it. An agnostic is somebody who doesn’t believe in something until there is evidence for it, so I’m agnostic.” Agnostics who do not have an active belief in gods are, by definition, atheists.
Mark Twain: “I found out that I was a Christian for revenue only and I could not bear the thought of that, it was so ignoble.”
Benjamin Franklin: “I have found Christian dogma unintelligible. Early in life, I absenteed myself from Christian assemblies.”
Thomas Edison: “I have never seen the slightest scientific proof of the religious ideas of heaven and hell, of future life for individuals, or of a personal God.”
Thomas Jefferson: “Religions are all alike – founded upon fables and mythologies.”
Albert Einstein: “The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”
Charles Darwin: “Disbelief crept over me at a very slow rate, but at last it was complete.” “The mystery of the beginning of all things is insoluble by us; and I for one must be content to remain an Agnostic.” Again, agnostics without god beliefs are atheists.
